While cancer rates in the US shoot higher, and obesity becomes an epidemic, you may be wondering what you can do to live a healthier life. Eating right, exercising, not smoking, and cutting back on alcohol, are all good steps to take, but did you know that a detox diet can help as well?
What does a detox diet do?
Sometimes called a cleanse, a detox diet will do just that: clean out vital organs inside you. Toxins and poisons picked up from the environment through pollution, preservatives and additives in foods, and many other sources, can accumulate in the body. Over time, this waste can cause a whole set of problems ranging from weight gain to bad skin, bloating, a weaker immune system, headaches and so on. By regularly including a detox diet into your life, you will not only help to prevent more serious diseases, but improve the quality of your life as well.
How does it work?
Most detox diets follow the same basic principles, with a few variations depending on your goals. Typically they involve cutting out caffeine, alcohol, and any foods with excess amounts of preservatives or sugar. Eating fresh, organic, raw fruits and vegetables, or in some cases, drinking large quantities of juice, is encouraged, and will help with the cleansing process. Some systems include herbal teas or supplements that gently support the organs you are targeting.
What are the results?
Increased energy, weight loss, and renewed mental clarity are the most reported outcomes of a detox diet. As your general sense of wellbeing increases, so does your inclination to continue those healthy habits that will prolong your life. Who doesn't want that win-win combination?
How do I begin?
Do your research carefully. There are many systems out there that claim incredible results but not all of them will work. Ask your doctor, friends, or co-workers for their recommendations on detox diets they've tried and liked. Or visit your local health food store. The employees there are a wealth of information and can help point you in the right direction. As always, before starting a detox diet, be sure to consult your physician to make sure you will still be meeting your nutritional needs. When you decide on a particular one, then go for it! Remember what your teachers used to say: "You'll only get out of it what you put into it."

Why Are Our Bodies Toxic?
Americans and people all over the world have taken on very unhealthy diets and have no idea what it is doing to our bodies Did you know the average American consumes 150 pounds of sugar yearly. This breaks down to roughly 52 tablespoons of sugar daily. This is an alarming rate. Many of the junk foods we consume contain harmful additives, chemicals, and many are filled with excitotoxins such as MSG and aspartame. These substances can literally stimulate neurons to death, causing serious brain damage. Sound serious, it is, the food industry knowingly adds these dangerous substances all in the name of making a buck. The average human could be a host for a hundred parasites alone. The thought alone makes me sick to my stomach.

Often, our systems become overloaded with waste. Today's over processed foods and environmental pollutants can easily overwhelm our delicate systems and cause toxic matter to build up in our bodies.
